Review by Raymund Ryan

The lucky reader of Knox Bhavan’s craft material detail will rightly encounter those three key aspects of architecture. In addition, attention is paid to clients’ practical, social and, we might even say, psychological needs. This is evident through photographs of the practice’s buildings in context, in light and in use; and throughout the text. You may well feel invited in for a cup of tea. The central role of clients in design should be entirely obvious; in my experience it’s comparatively rare. Knox Bhavan have wonderful clients yet they are also of course wonderful architects.

Craft Material Detail

This book is a series of essays, which describe just some of the work to have come out of the studio of Knox Bhavan over the past 20 years.

With an emphasis on private houses it also touches on making furniture and complex detailing in construction. It looks at the reality and experience of the making of these buildings from the perspective of client, builder and architect.

Knox Bhavan ask more from the building blocks of architecture, of wall, door, window, ceiling. Each one has to perform its part to make the building right and to make them so much more than they might be in other hands.

One can go straight from general formal description [of the house] to discuss how it is celebrated in the manner and detail of its building: and I think this is true of all the Knox Bhavan schemes illustrated in this lovely book.
