Tudor House

Tudor House, Guernsey 2000-2003

In this development the traditional details of St Peter Port have been referred to and reinterpreted in a contemporary way. The building which is mixed development of 1200sqm of office space, 18 apartments, retail space and underground parking has two very different faces, a grand commercial elevation onto Le Bordage, and a smaller more domestic scale elevation onto Mill Street. There is a dividing spine wall through the building, which runs parallel to the two streets. This wall divides four floors of commercial office space on the Bordage frontage from small scale shops with flats above on the Mill street frontage. Crowning this are a further two storeys of rooftop apartments which have wonderful views out to sea. These apartments are wrapped around a central landscaped rooftop courtyard open to the sky. This allows them light from at least two and sometimes three directions. The building is clad in prepatinated copper which gives it a blue/green maritime glow and the main Le Bordage elevation is sun shaded and adorned with specially made aluminium castings and stainless steel mesh/rigging to continue the maritime theme.
