The Malthouse

The Malthouse, Norton St. Philip, Somerset 2008

The Malthouse forms part of a collection of medieval and 17th century Grade II listed buildings, grouped around a central courtyard in Somerset, extensively renovated by Knox Bhavan Architects.

The buildings have been empty for over twenty years during which time they suffered serious neglect, vandalism, robberies and fire damage.

Knox Bhavan's work combines meticulous historical restoration using traditional materials and building techniques with simple, stylish and modern interventions.

Knox Bhavan adopted a hands-on responsive approach using hand drawn site sketches and frequent site visits to ensure that the precious fabric and character of the building was enhanced by the building process. Their established skill for beautiful detailing was a major contributor to the overall success of combining the ancient with the new.

Upon completion the scheme received a "Built in Quality Awards" from Mendip Planning Authority for best domestic renovation and in recognition of its high standards of construction and workmanship.
