Carson Road, South London 2008
Knox Bhavan Architects were commissioned to remodel this house which had been converted into three flats in the early 1960's to recreate a family home.
On entering the house the eye is drawn to the new stair running through the full height of the house. A cast aluminium chassis supports shaped european oak treads with open risers allowing light to flood through the centre of the house. Simple and careful detailing using responsibly sourced timber articulates the remodelled house, introducing clean modern lines while enhancing its Victorian elegance. The music room is fitted with yellow gloss joinery, framing a black piano, designed to accommodate a variety of musical instruments, accessories and sheet music. The kitchen features bespoke oak kitchen units finished with Burlington slate worktops curving to accentuate the flow through the room. The master bedroom leads to a dressing room and bathroom lined with cedar and cherry slip-matched, veneered bespoke joinery. The continuity of materials through the suite provides a sense of unity.
The natural palette and intelligent design complement the original building whilst showcasing some of Knox Bhavan's trademark detailing.
"A beautifully detailed suburban family home using a variety of timbers... It is a real credit to the practice [which] through working closely with the client and contractors, has acheived the highest quality of detail and workmanship." - Judges, Wood Awards 2009
